Mátra
Known for its cool-climate aromatic whites like Pinot Gris and Muscat, Mátra is the largest region in Upper Hungary, specializing in fresh, mineral-driven white wines.
Mátra (pronounced “ma-tra”), sheltered by the Mátra Mountains, is Hungary’s largest Upper Hungary wine district, famed for its volcanic soils and cool climate. Known traditionally for vibrant, mineral-rich whites like Pinot Gris, Muscat, and Müller-Thurgau, Mátra now also explores earthy reds like Kékfrankos and Pinot Noir, with some experimental Syrah plantings. The Magna Mátra community of quality-focused winemakers champions local varieties, giving this region a reputation for fresh yet complex wines.
