Kadarka
Pronunciation: “KAH-dahr-kah”
Taste
Kadarka wines are pale in color and typically light to medium-bodied, with fresh red fruit flavors such as raspberry, cherry, and cranberry. Its hallmark is its spicy character, often described as ginger or clove-like with a hint of paprika. The grape has high acidity and low tannins, making it refreshing and vibrant on the palate, with a delicate, silky texture.
Where It’s Grown and Styles
Kadarka is grown predominantly in the Szekszárd and Eger Districts, where it contributes to the famed Egri Bikavér blends. As a single varietal, Kadarka is often made in a lighter, almost Pinot Noir-like style, with a focus on bright fruit and spice.
Cool Fact
Kadarka is one of the oldest grape varieties in Hungary and is believed to have been introduced by Serbs fleeing the Ottoman Empire in the 16th century. It was once the dominant grape in Hungary before being partially replaced by international varieties.
