A brief history

Schunk Winery is a family-owned and operated winery, where winemaking is based on family traditions. Since 1996, our winery has been producing red wines, fresh white wines and refreshing rosés in small and large batches, in a changing assortment. Continuous area growth, new plantings, new grape varieties and step-by-step technological developments characterize the growth and development of our family winery. Our commitment to winemaking is also proven by the results achieved by our wines in local, regional and wider wine competitions. With our

Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot varieties, we have proven that not only high-quality white wines, but also premium category red wines can be made on the southern slopes of the Mecsek. In our small winery, operated as a family business, white wines are primarily made with reductive technology with steel tank fermentation, and red wines are made with traditional oak barrel and barrique maturation. In addition to varieties from our

own plantations (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc, Cserszegi Fűszeres), we also make wines from purchased grapes (e.g. Portugieser, Pinot Blanc, Hárslevelű). In addition to the traditional cork bottle closure, we introduced screw-cap bottles (pilver caps) for our fresh white wines in 2014. Our

goal is to contribute to the restoration of the old reputation of the Pécs Wine Region, which has great traditions and excellent growing conditions, with the wines of Schunk Pince!

About the production site - Pécs Wine Region - Hosszúhetény

The Schunk Winery is located in Hosszúhetény, in the Pécs-Mecsek Wine Region, just 20 km from Pécs, at the southern foot of the highest mountains of the Mecsek Mountains, Zengő and Hármas. Excellent cycling and hiking trails, village guesthouses and local wine producers await tourists, visitors and wine tasters arriving here. Within

the Carpathian Basin, the Mediterranean-like natural features of Baranya County, especially Pécs and the settlements in its catchment area, create excellent conditions for grape growing and winemaking. This also confirms that Hosszúhetény has had a long tradition of grape growing and winemaking.

The soil conditions are favorable for grape growing - as in the entire county - here too: forest soils, loess and mezze soil types alternate, but especially in the Pécs wine region, in the Mecsek area, there are many rocks - primarily sandstone, limestone and granite - which lend an excellent mineral character and a full, fiery flavor to the wines.

The number of hours of sunshine measured locally and the annual heat total show values corresponding to first-class French wine-growing regions. The pleasantly warm autumn weather, the "summer of old ladies", is perhaps most prevalent here, where the influence of the southern Mediterranean climate is already significant.

Discover this special region, experience this unique Mediterranean climate and come to us and taste the wines of the Schunk Cellar!
