A brief history
Tokaji is the world's first closed wine region. The special protection was granted by a royal decree issued in 1737, which precisely regulated which areas could produce wine called Tokaji.
The UNESCO World Heritage Site encompasses a total of 27 settlements and 6,000 hectares of vineyards. Tokaj-Hegyalja is considered one of the best wine regions in the world due to its unique combination of bedrock, soil and climate.
